Easy 'Dirt Dessert' Recipe
Dirt Dessert, a layered treat made with crushed cookies, chocolate pudding, and a gummy worm, is a long-time favorite of my 9-year-old son. For the past 6 years, we have made these adorable goodies instead of cupcakes to share with his class during his in-school birthday party and they are always a big hit. These simple-to-make parfaits replicate the different layers of soil found in a backyard garden and are a fun way to usher in spring or just add a little excitement to your after-dinner sweet. That is, of course, if you can keep the kids away from them until after dinner, these confections are pretty tasty—especially for a dessert called dirt!

1. Crush Oreos or your favorite chocolate sandwich cookie until they are crumbly and resemble topsoil. I normally put the cookies in a large zip top bag and beat them with a wooden rolling pin, but you can also chop them finely with a knife or give them a whirl in the food processor to break them down.
2. Spoon chocolate pudding into the bottom of a dessert bowl and cover it with the cookie crumbles. I use glass parfait glasses so the kids are able to see the different layers, but it would be cute served in a small clay flower pot with each layer being a sweet surprise. I have seen dirt desserts with crushed graham crackers or vanilla wafers underneath the pudding as a sandy layer at the bottom. We've also used them as a spooky Halloween treat.
3. Top your treat with a gummy worm or insect of your choice. Grab a spoon and enjoy!
