Explore Pelham Bay: NYC's Hidden Gem for Families

5/5/24 - By Sonia Gonzalez

Nestled in the northeast corner of the Bronx, Pelham Bay is a vibrant, family-friendly, neighborhood with a rich history dating back to the mid-1600s and an abundance of activities for kids of all ages. As a local mom raising three kids here, I can tell you firsthand that Pelham Bay offers a unique "suburb-in-the-city" vibe, complete with tree-lined streets, beloved local businesses, and a close-knit community where neighbors know your name. The neighborhood offers a plethora of family friendly destinations including the 2,765-acre Pelham Bay Park, NYC's largest green space, featuring an equestrian center, bike trails, playgrounds, two golf courses, Orchard Beach and the historic Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum.

A Brief History of Pelham Bay

Pelham Bay's roots trace back to the mid-1600s, when Connecticut doctor Thomas Pell acquired over 9,000 acres from the Siwanoy Native Americans. This land encompassed parts of modern-day Westchester, City Island, and Pelham Bay itself. The area flourished into a residential haven in the 1920s, drawing European immigrants who shaped its diverse cultural landscape.Pelham Bay Today: A Cultural Melting Pot

Today, Pelham Bay is a testament to its diverse population, known for its welcoming atmosphere and strong community ties. It's also the last stop on the 6 train, a station famously featured in the classic 1974 film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.
