Dekalb Market: Brooklyn's Funky New Outdoor Shopping Spot

11/2/11 - By Karlyn

Sadly, this outdoor market closed permanently in September, 2012. If you're not stressing out about holiday shopping yet, you will be soon. (Sorry!) But there's no reason to wait until the annual holiday markets open to start your gift search. The Dekalb Market is a funky new shopping spot in Downtown Brooklyn and it's open seven days a week, year-round. I'd heard great things about it from other families, so last week my four-year-old and I went to check it out.

The market is housed inside a series of repurposed shipping containers stacked on top of one another, kind of like a life-size set of my son's colorful Duplo Blocks. The bottom crates have been transformed into various shops and restaurants. The offerings are really cool and diverse, including designer duds, handmade jewelry, fine art, children's clothes and toys, coffee from Joe and sumptuous Jacques Torres chocolates.

In addition to being a great shopping spot, Dekalb Market makes for a fun family outing. There's lots of space for kids to roam around and you can even pack or buy lunch and eat at the picnic tables, where you'll sometimes be entertained by live musicians. Here's how my son and I spent our day (and our money) at Dekalb Market.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

When we exited the Dekalb Avenue subway stop, we were right by the market. The first thing we did was grab a cup of Jacques Torres' Wicked Hot Chocolate and share a fried chicken sandwich on a biscuit from Cheeky Sandwiches.

Dekalb Market prides itself on entrepreneurship, quality, community and sustainability, and that philosophy is reflected in the shops. After lunch, we spent about two hours exploring the labyrinth of more than 30 sellers, a third of which are food vendors serving all kinds of exotic eats, like DUB Australian meat pies, Cuzin's Duzin doughnuts and artisanal teas from The Tea Box.

There are a number of children's boutiques, perfect for finding last-minute birthday or holiday presents. I really liked the eco-friendly clothes and toys at Hank & JoJo and Little Poco. At Honeysuckle & Hearts, I tried on jewelry and accessories for myself. There's definitely plenty here for mom and dad (as it should be, since we're the ones with the money).

You'll also find Dekalb Farm, a collaborative urban garden project run by several neighborhood groups. The farm holds free educational workshops and events throughout the season. Join the email list to find out what's coming up.

Since Dekalb Market's shipping containers are arranged in a semi-circle, there's plenty of space for kids to play, but the walking paths are covered with gravel, so it's tough to push a stroller. There is a bathroom at the market—in a shipping crate, of course—but it's nicer than you'd expect.

Dekalb Market is located at the intersection of Willoughby Street and the Flatbush Avenue Extension. Open daily 8am-10pm, although individual shop hours may vary. By subway, take the B, R or Q to Dekalb Avenue, or the 2 or 3 to Hoyt Street. Parking is available in the area.
