Visit Historic Richmond Town to honor Juneteenth with demonstrations of hearth cooking, discussions of social history, and historical reenactment. Learn about the history and origins of this holiday celebrating the end of American chattel slavery.
Experience history coming alive by stepping into the past through immersive, site-wide programs including:
- U.S. Colored Troops Encampment – Civil War reenactors from Living History Co. bring the history of Black soldiers to life.
- Reading of General Order No. 3 – The pivotal proclamation that marked emancipation in Texas.
- Interactive Talks and Demonstrations – Including hearth cooking in the Guyon-Lake-Tysen House, an exploration of Sandy Ground oystermen, and the meaning behind cultural traditions like "Jumping the Broom".
