In Plumb Line: Charles White and the Contemporary, Christopher Myers employs the centuries-old needle arts technique of appliqué in his work Pushing Flowers. Participants in this workshop create their own work of art using basic appliqué methods.

The application of fabric shapes on a cloth background can be found in many art forms, from Dahomean banners to the work of generations of African American quilters.
