Grand Solmar Land's End Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Review

7/12/14 - By Mary Beth Lawlor

Looking for a vacation spot where you and the family can enjoy the sun, sand, great food and plenty of water adventure? Cabo San Lucas, Mexico could be in the cards. Many have been skipping Mexico due to concerns of safey, but due to the location at the southernmost tip of the 1000-mile long Baja Peninsula, tourism in Los Cabos continues to thrive. Los Cabos airport currently welcomes direct flights from 24 cities in the US & Canada so it's easy to get to.

Built right into the rock cliffs along the Pacific ocean, Grand Solmar Land's End is a luxury resort that provides a lot of visual bang for the buck. Truly at the land's end, it's located at the very tip of Cabo San Lucas, between the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez, the town is a 10 minute walk or quick shuttle bus ride away. I think this is a special resort for a family looking for a peaceful, luxurious place to stay in a location that also serves up all sorts of adventure.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

The Grand Solmar, one of five resorts owned by The Solmar Hotels and Resorts in Cabo San Lucas, is their premier and newest property. We were fortunate enough to be invited to check it out. After a 45 minute shuttle ride from the airport, we were greeted at the beautiful outdoor lobby with delicious and refreshing cocktails, seting the stage for the relaxation that was to come.

In keeping with the standard of the resort, the rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. My spa grand studio included a small yet full kitchen, king bed, dining table, murphy bed and a private patio. The spacious bathroom included a separate tub and shower. We toured the three bedroom penthouse and were left drooling. The views from the top of the resort are amazing. The penthouses are incredibly spacious and beautifully decorated. Truly a luxury experience. It could be fantastic to share the penthouse with a large extended family or just a group of friends. Starting at around $473 a night, the grand studios aren't cheap but sleep a family of 4 comfortably. They do offer promotions at times so you may want to be on their email list so that you are notified. August and September are the best months to look for deals because it gets very hot.

I'd describe this as a mid-size resort. It's not so huge that you could get lost and not see your family for a few days yet it's not so small that you couldn't steal away and find some time for yourself for a few hours. While there are many couples heading to Cabo, there are loads of families too. At Grand Solmar they have a kids club which includes a mini "screening" area with big flat screen tv's and armchairs as well as a second story "treehouse" complete with "clouds" attached to the ceiling for effect. With a reservation, the resort will plan activities for your children while you relax and get a massage in one of the oceanside cabanas. That being said, this is not a resort that is catering solely to families. It's welcoming of children but you won't find a full agenda of things to do for kids each day on the resort. It will be up to you and the concierge to plan out a family friendly itinerary while there, which is very much possible.

Guests can choose the all inclusive package which allows you to eat and drink all day in the resort or opt out for more flexibility. The food at Grand Solmar is very good. La Roca is the fine dining restaurant on the resort. We enjoyed a cooking demonstration and the chef and his team are very professional. You can eat outside on the terrace overlooking the Pacific or in the modern restaurant. One evening we enjoyed a decadent five course meal paired with five different Mexican wines. Even though we thought we couldn't possibly stand to eat another bite, once desert came we managed to lick our molten lava cake (served in corn husks) clean! The breakfast buffet each morning will satisfy any appetite. I especially liked that they offered a fresh green juice on the menu. They of course have in-pool dining and bars which is a fun way to have lunch. For authentic Mexican cuisine you'll have to make a reservation outside of the resort.

Giving back is important and I loved that we kept things real, amidst all of the luxury, by seeing the other side of Cabo San Lucas. On the second day of our visit, we toured the Solmar Foundation's charities. The developer of Solmar funds local charities in the Cabo San Lucas area and guests can schedule a tour while at the resort. We visited a shelter for local families, an animal rescue shelter, a school for children of single mothers who live in poverty and a seniors center. Everywhere we went the people greeted us with hugs, handshakes and smiles. It was really a wonderful thing to see how the resorts are giving back to their community and how guests of the hotels can get involved and help too.

The beautifully designed infinity pools line the resort along the beach. The largest pool area is for families and the smaller pool area is for adults only. The waves are big and powerful and swimming in the Pacific is not encouraged. That's okay because the pools and hot tubs are so divine that you don't want to leave them. However, it'd be a shame to come all the way to Mexico and not take a dip in the ocean. Lover's Beach, situated on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula, is much calmer and is a great place to go for a swim or snorkel in the sea. One tip: wear sneakers when you visit the beach because the sand is quite rough.

There's so much to do in Cabo, especially for families. During the months of June – September, visitors can lend a helping hand to the sea turtle conservation effort in Los Cabos. Guided by experienced naturalists, guests have the ability to adopt baby sea turtles and help release them back into the ocean. During the winter season, guests can get up close and personal with whales migrating from the arctic to the warm, calm waters surrounding the Baja Peninsula. You can go zip-lining, rock-climbing, swimming with dolphins and even camel riding in the dessert! Of course, they have jet ski rentals, fishing trips, scuba diving and pretty much any other water activity you could imagine as well.

Another day we went out with Cabo Adventures on a snorkeling, stand up paddle board and kayaking expedition on the Sea of Cortez. Our guide was a hoot and made sure that everyone felt comfortable and safe. We toured the famous Arch area, rock formations in the Pacific, at the very tip of Baja where the Pacific and Sea of Cortez meet. A bonus was viewing the sea lions congregating on the rocks. We then boated over to Lover's Beach for some snorkeling. The water was a bit chilly in early June but once we jumped in, we were rewarded with the company of many beautiful fish. We finished off by heading over to another area for kayaking and stand up paddle boarding before heading back to the marina. It was a full day of fun and ideal for a family with children ages 6 and up. Grand Solmar has a small pool that is always heated to 100 degrees. It was my first stop once we got back from snorkeling and was the perfect way to end our day of adventure in the Sea of Cortez.

We left sun kissed, relaxed and well fed. We enjoyed our adventure and the pampering of the staff at Grand Solmar. It's a great family get-away, you won't be disappointed!
